California’s culinary stars shine bright at 2025 MICHELIN Guide Ceremony

The 2025 MICHELIN Guide California Ceremony brought the culinary spotlight to the state capital, honoring chefs and restaurants whose innovation, precision and passion continue to elevate California as a global dining destination.

These celebrated honors are awarded according to MICHELIN’s rigorous rating system, which helps travelers and food lovers identify standout dining experiences:

  • Three Stars – Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey
  • Two Stars – Excellent cooking, worth a detour
  • One Star – High-quality cooking, worth a stop
  • Green Star – Awarded to restaurants leading the way in sustainable practices
  • Bib Gourmand – Recognizes restaurants offering good food at a moderate price point

Hosted by Visit Sacramento on June 25 at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center in Sacramento, the event marked a historic night for the state’s vibrant food scene with two new Three MICHELIN Star restaurants added to the prestigious list: Providence in Hollywood and Somni in West Hollywood. Providence was promoted from Two Stars, while Somni made history by becoming the first U.S. restaurant to earn three stars just seven months after opening.

California also welcomed two new Two MICHELIN Starred restaurants: Enclos in Sonoma and Kiln in San Francisco. Five restaurants earned their first One Michelin Star. 

 A historic first for sushi in the U.S.

Chef Nozomi Moro of Mori Nozomi earned her first MICHELIN Star and became the first female sushi chef in the United States to receive the honor. She leads an all-female team at the eight-seat sushi counter in Los Angeles, offering a refined omakase experience that celebrates precision, hospitality and seasonal ingredients.

Recognizing sustainability and value

The 2025 selection also included two new MICHELIN Green Stars awarded to Enclos and San Francisco’s Sons & Daughters for their leadership in sustainable gastronomy. Additionally, six new restaurants were added to the Bib Gourmand list, which recognizes quality cooking at a great value.

Spotlight on Rising Talent and Excellence in Service

In addition to Star and Bib Gourmand recognitions, the MICHELIN Guide honored four industry professionals with Special Awards for their exceptional contributions.

Eylan in Menlo Park earned the Exceptional Cocktails Award for its standout bar program. The Sommelier Award, was presented to Chris Barnum-Dann of Localis in Sacramento. Nick Peyton of Cyrus received the Outstanding Service Award. Rounding out the honors, Ki Kim of Restaurant Ki in Los Angeles was named the MICHELIN Young Chef Award winner highlighting the next generation of culinary leadership.

With 548 restaurants now recognized across the state, including 65 One Star, 14 Two Star and 8 Three Star restaurants, California continues to set the standard for culinary excellence and diversity.
